Russian Stainless Steel Market on the Rise

The year of 2010 can be certainly called as successful for the Russian stainless steel market. According to an expert appraisal by SpetsStal Association, stainless steel consumption in 2010, if compared with 2009, rose 62.7% to 312.1 th. tons. At the start of 2010, it was hardly imaginable that in one year stainless steel consumption would not only regain the before-crisis position but exceed it. To remind, in 2009, as compared to 2008, stainless steel consumption fell 36.2% to 191.8 th. tons.

 
In 2010, compared to 2009, Russia’s local stainless steel making rose 37.5% to 122.1 th. tons, while imports grew 78.9% to 196.1 th. tons, at the same time, exports were cut 5.8% down to 5.9 th. tons. 
In 2010, the structure of stainless steel consumption in  Russia looked as follows: - the share of flats amounted to 60.5% (in 2009 – 56.1%), longs – 19.8% (20,2%), seamless tubes – 8.6% (7.1%),  welded tubes – 6.7% (11.0%), wire – 2.7% (2.8%), slabs/ingots – 1.7% (2.8%). 

In 2010 the share of imports grew to 62.8% (in 2009 – 57.1%). 
The most ‘vulnerable’ sectors of stainless steel consumption still remain welded tubes with a share imports at 79.2% (in 2009 – 86.2%), flats – 69.4% (61.8%) and seamless tubes – 62.1% (57.4%).

Imports of wire also stepped over a 50% barrier to 56.6% (34.0%).
