September hits records in stainless steel imports in 2009

According to an expert appraisal by Spetsstal Association, stainless steel imports to Russia in September, comparing to August, rose 71% to 10.8 thousand tons. This is the best result since the beginning of 2009.

The rise in stainless steel imports may signify that the worst time for the Russian market has passed. The market is in an expectation of a slow but stable restoration of stainless steel consumption. However there is still far to go.

January-September

The actual capacity of the Russian market for stainless steel from January to September, compared to the same period of 2008, decreased 47.7% to 70.8 thousand tons. The major loss was in flats -53.6%, wire -50.3%, seamless tubes -43.9%, longs -41.9%, welded tubes -25.5% and billets -15.8%.
