Russian stainless steel production and export in 2017

According to the expert assessment of Spetsstal Assosiation, in 2017 the volume of stainless steel melting in Russia, compared with 2016, increased by 2.2% and amounted to 92.46 thousand tons.

At the same time, the volume of production rose by 0.7% to 117.22 thousand tons.
A positive difference between the volume of Russian production and melting is connected with the fact that part of the output in Russia is produced from foreign semi-finished.
In particular, this refers to the production of welded tubes, which are 100% produced from foreign flat products, heavy plates (100% - foreign slabs) and seamless pipes (27% - foreign tubular billets).

The change in production of these goods determines the main trend that has developed over the past five years.

Production
In 2017, compared with 2016, production of stainless steel long products increased by 8.9% to 53.28 thousand tons, welded tubes – by 4.0% to 22.98 thousand tons, forgings – by 11.4% to 1.8 thousand tons and wire – by 28.2% to 0.95 thousand tons.

Production of stainless steel HR flat-rolled products decreased by 17.4% to 19.45 thousand tons, seamless tubes – by 2.7% to 15.33 thousand tons and CR flat-rolled products increased - by 9.7% to 3.43 thousand tons.

Export
According to an estimate by SpetsStal Association, the volume of Russian stainless steel export in 2017, compared with 2016, increased by 62.2% to 7,906 tons.
Export of seamless tubes increased by 324.4% to 2,818 tons, welded tubes – by 89.5% to 1,628 tons, flat products – by 11.0% to 1,202 tons, forgings – by 231.3% to 497 tons and wire – by 38.9% to 75 tons.
Export of bars/rods decreased by 18.3% to 1,686 tons.
